The work of Jesus on earth is continued through the work of the Church, in particular through the Sacraments. Jesus came to transform us and we are changed every time we receive a Sacrament.  They are never just social rites of passage. They have a real effect. They’re not just beautiful rituals although they include beautiful rituals. They give birth to and nourish the grace of the Holy Spirit within us. This grace, the seed of heavenly life, even now empowers us to love with the love of Christ.

The Sacraments of Initiation

BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION AND EUCHARIST

Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist initiate us into God’s family.

Baptism is our birth into divine life; Confirmation strengthens us to be witnesses.  And in the Eucharist, Jesus Himself is really present as our ongoing spiritual nourishment.

Adults entering the Church receive these sacraments together on the same occasion. Infants who are baptized wait to complete their initiation until they are old enough to be adequately prepared for the sacraments.

The Sacraments of Healing

PENANCE (Reconciliation) AND THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK.

We’re still weak, sinful and broken, and always in need of reconciliation with God and with each other. The Sacrament of Penance is available to us as a wonderful and frequent means of this reconciliation.

The Anointing of the Sick brings comfort, peace, courage and the forgiveness of sins to those who are ill.

The Sacraments of Service

MATRIMONY AND HOLY ORDERS

Holy Orders and Matrimony give special grace for particular missions to serve the People of God - the priest as shepherd and the married couple through service of the family.

PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENTS

Those who take up the opportunity God offers us through the sacraments need preparation, in order that heart and mind are ready to receive the sacraments worthily. (Babies are the exception – but they will need instruction once they’re old enough to understand!)
